When to Plant Tulip Bulbs, Zone by Zone
Plant when the soil cools, not by the calendar.

A tulip bulb does not need much from you, and that is the point. Start with healthy plants, give them a spot that suits them and water them through the first few weeks. After that, a layer of mulch and a quick look once a week is most of the job.
The rule of thumb
Plant when night temperatures stay between 40 and 50 °F, usually six weeks before the ground freezes.
